An Illustrated Tribute to the People of the Skies

From the enigmatic smile of the Hoopoe to the migration of the chickadees, and from the laborious daily life of the Capercaillie to the aerial acrobatics of the Northern Lapwing, *The Illustrated Lover’s Dictionary of Birds* explores the diversity and richness of the world of birds. It pays tribute to the unique characteristics of each species: for example, we learn why the Brent Goose travels 5,000 kilometers every winter from Siberia, or what life is like for a pair of Bonelli’s Eagles.

Written by Allain Bougrain Dubourg, president of the LPO, this beautiful reference book brings together the work of some twenty wildlife photographers and several illustrators, featuring paintings, sketches, and photographs. Muriel Pénicaud is delighted that her perspective is represented in the book with two images: *Intimité* (2024) and *Inspir* (2024).

Allain Bougrain Dubourg's Perspective

Allain Bougrain Dubourg shares his expertise and his deep connection with birds, from the most magnificent to the most common. Throughout the book, he weaves together personal experiences and discoveries—from Brigitte Bardot’s reflections on her love for small birds to innovations in biomimicry inspired by their wings.

Never before has society taken such an interest in birds: “birdwatching” is becoming a “national sport” enjoyed by families, and gardens are being filled with birdhouses and feeders. In doing so, society is following in the footsteps of Leonardo da Vinci, Maurice Genevoix, George Sand, Jacques Prévert, and so many other enthusiasts, all of whom are featured in this dictionary.

Allain Bougrain Dubourg also paints an unflinching picture of the current state of affairs—from overwhelmed wildlife rescue centers to the illegal trade in songbirds, from the extinction of the Aepyornis to the hopes embodied by the LPO sanctuaries—all while celebrating the splendor of birds, particularly those that live alongside us.
